Aztec Update

Dear Koogler Middle School Families,

We want to inform you about an important facilities update that will temporarily impact in-person learning at Koogler Middle School.

Earlier this week, a major water line break occurred on campus. This is not a small leak, it is a significant break in a main line that services several areas of the building. To give you a sense of the scope, Koogler Middle School typically uses about 65,000 gallons of water per month, but we’ve already exceeded 400,000 gallons this month due to this break. That means we’re losing roughly 14,000 gallons (or more) of water per day.

Repair crews are scheduled to begin work on November 1, 2025, when concrete removal and excavation can begin. Until then, we must turn off the water supply to prevent additional damage and waste. Continuing to leave the water on would not only be costly to the district and taxpayers, but could also cause flooding, sinkholes, and building damage.

During this brief period, Koogler Middle School will shift to remote learning to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff while repairs take place.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Remote Learning Dates: Starting Monday, October 27th

  • No Remote Learning: There will be no remote learning on Monday, November 3rd due to Staff Professional Development (Student Holiday) and no school on Tuesday, November 4th for the School Holiday.

  • Return to In-Person Learning: We will notify families as soon as repairs are complete and when students may return.

  • Dorm: The dorm will remain open and operating as normal.

  • After-School Tutoring: There will be no after-school tutoring during this time.

  • Athletics: Coaches will contact student-athletes directly regarding alternative practice locations during the remote learning period.

    • The KMS Wrestling match vs. Tibbetts, scheduled for tomorrow, will still take place as planned.

  • Student Expectations:

    Students will follow the schedule below. Teachers will communicate specific instructions and links to students prior to the remote days.

    Monday–Friday Remote Learning Schedule

    • 1st Period: 7:55 – 8:23 (28 minutes)

    • 2nd Period: 8:27 – 8:55 (28 minutes)

    • 3rd Period: 8:59 – 9:27 (28 minutes)

    • 4th Period: 9:31 – 9:59 (28 minutes)

    • 5th Period: 10:03 – 10:31 (28 minutes)

    • 6th Period: 10:35 – 11:03 (28 minutes)

    • 7th Period: 11:37 – 12:05 (28 minutes)

  • Staff will be available by email in the afternoon.

  • Technology Needs: If your student requires a device or internet support, please contact Technology at 505-334-9474.

  • Meals: Grab-and-go lunches will be available for pickup from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the KMS pick-up lane.

We recognize this is an unexpected disruption, and we deeply appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this major repair. Our priority is to protect our students, staff, and facilities while minimizing learning loss.
