Dear Aztec Community,
As we conclude the current two-year block, the NMAA has finalized its statewide review and realignment of districts for all school-sponsored athletic events. These adjustments are based on school enrollment. The NMAA reviews enrollment numbers from the past few years and uses those averages to determine each school’s classification. For football, schools with consistently low winning percentages over the last three to four years may be placed in a lower classification under NMAA guidelines to support program rebuilding.
While most of Aztec’s programs remain unchanged, we are excited to share one important update: the Aztec High School Football Program will move to the Northern 3A classification for the next two years. This shift reflects statewide enrollment trends and opens the door to new opportunities for our student-athletes.
We view this as a positive step forward for our program. Competing in Northern 3A will help support our ongoing rebuilding efforts, create more competitive matchups, and allow our athletes to continue developing and growing. When this two-year cycle concludes, the NMAA will again review our placement based on updated enrollment numbers.
Thank you for standing behind our student-athletes and supporting the continued growth of Aztec High School Football. We are energized by this new chapter and look forward to seeing our Tigers thrive on the field.
Thank you for your support,
David Sweet
Aztec Athletic Director
