Toni Hopper Pendergrass, Ph.D.

Dr. Toni Hopper Pendergrass graduated from Aztec in 1989.  During high school, she was active in Future Farmers of America (FFA), student council and basketball.  She was honored to serve as the homecoming queen, FFA district vice president and as the vice president of the senior class.

Toni attended New Mexico State University (NMSU) where she earned a bachelor of science degree in agriculture economics and business and a master of science degree in agricultural economics and economics.  Toni was a Crimson Scholar, on the Dean’s List and received the College of Agriculture Outstanding Undergraduate Student, Outstanding Graduate Student and Dean's Award for Excellence recognitions. She was active in the following organizations:  Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Gamma Sigma Delta Graduate Honors Fraternity, Golden Key National Honor Society, and Alpha Zeta Honors Fraternity.

Toni went to work at Clovis Community College as the director of planning and research after college. She then pursued a Ph.D. in educational administration with a specialization in community college leadership from the University of Texas at Austin. Toni then worked at El Centro College in Dallas as an assistant to the president, executive dean, and as interim vice president of academic affairs.  In addition, Toni served as the vice president of learning at San Jacinto College, South Campus in Houston before joining San Juan College in 2012 as president.

Toni serves on numerous local and national boards.  She was awarded the Chair Academy’s 2006 International Exemplary Leader Award and the 2014 Excellence for Student Achievement Award presented by the NM School Boards Association in cooperation with the Farmington Board of Education.

Toni is the daughter of Carroll and Marylee Hopper. She and her husband, Dr. Douglas Pendergrass have three children, Douglas, Raylee, and Hadley.  Toni is proud to be back in her home community of Aztec and is passionate and committed to helping others succeed through education.
