What's the Big Deal about Common Core Standards?

The Common Core State Standards initiative is a broad transformation in education for teaching and learning!  The new set of standards for math and English/language arts will reach students across the nation as they prepare for college and career readiness.  Most states will have the CCSS in place by the 2014-15 school year. New Mexico has mandated implementation of the CCSS for grades K-3 during the 2012-13 school year. In Aztec, we plan to fully implement CCSS in grades K-5 in 2012-13 and it will be a transition year for grades 6-12.

The Common Core Standards are:

Aligned with college and career expectations

• Focused and coherent

• Inclusive of rigorous content and application of knowledge through higher order skills

 • Build upon strengths and lessons  of current state  standards

• Internationally  benchmarked so that all students are prepared tosucceed in our global economy and society

• Based on evidence and research

Instruction using the CCSS will look different because of the rigor involved.  Teachers will use deeper and more focused instructional strategies.
